Meet Wendy McMillian, the woman behind the very-sexy Velvet Kitten brand. (The sketches are hers and the images feature Velvet Kitten designs. )
Lingerie Diva: So, let's bring the newbies up to speed. What's Velvet Kitten all about?
Wendy McMillian: Velvet Kitten is the private brand of Lingerie Diva. It started about eight years ago. We started with mainly lingerie pieces, and, in the recent years, we have expanded into sleepwear, plus size, exotic pieces, and shapewear.
LD: What kind of woman is your lingerie created for?
WM: Velvet kitten wants to create a brand that all women feel comfortable wearing. From bodystockings to pajamas, almost any woman can find a Velvet Kitten piece that fits her personality.
LD: How did you get into lingerie design?
WM: My grandmother taught me to sew when I was very young, and I would make clothes for my Barbie dolls. I wanted to be a fashion designer from a very young age.
I graduated with an Apparel Design Degree from Iowa State University. I had a strong focus in bridal design, but quickly fell in love with lingerie design.
Bridal and lingerie are actually very similar in that they both use very feminine details and heavily reply on fabrics to create unique designs.
LD: What inspires you when you are designing?
WM: I love working with the fabrics first. Often, the fabric will inspire the final design.
It is also important to stay current with new fashion trends. Even new clothing trends can be translated into lingerie.
LD: Thoughts on lace? Is it overused or a forever-classic?
WM: Forever classic—lace is timeless. With all the new fabric techniques available, lace can look completely different and can be used in so many ways.
LD: What's something a lot of people don't realize about designing/creating lingerie?
WM: How important all the small details are and choosing the right fabrics for each style. Even the weight of the fabric can alter the end result of the design.
LD: That's fascinating!
To wrap it up, are there any celebrities you would you love to get your lingerie on?
WM: We create a brand for the everyday woman—creating pieces that she can feel comfortable wearing and can afford.
A celebrity would be great, but, really, it's wonderful when any woman chooses our brand.
