Some of the world’s most athletic women compete in the Legends Football League (LFL), formerly known as the Lingerie Football League, to showcase their athletic ability and have some fun while doing it.
Many of the women in the Legends lingerie football league have been playing sports their entire lives and are also moms, engineers, and teachers!
Here’s a guide to the league and the teams and players leading it.
The Legends Football League (LFL) is a women's 7-on-7 tackle American football league, with games played in the spring and summer in arenas and stadiums around the world.
The LFL has four national and international divisions, with 39 teams in total. The games are broadcasted to over 200 television markets and draw stadium crowds of more than 22,000 spectators.
The league’s playing style is full-contact and similar to other indoor football leagues. A game consists of four ten-minute quarters and a 12-minute halftime.
Many of the teams were coached by former NFL players and coaches who were already well-known in their respective cities.
Most of the players have a background in other athletics at the college and semi-professional level, as well as some experience in tackle football from playing in other leagues.
Founded in 2009 by Mitch Mortaza, the Lingerie Football League was a spinoff of the Lingerie Bowl. This one-game event was broadcasted during halftime of Super Bowl 38 in 2004 as a pay-per-view option.
Of course, it garnered a bit of interest.
A common misconception is that all the players wear dainty lingerie to their games. This was previously true.
The original lingerie football uniforms were more for show than for performance. They had some protective gear, but not nearly as comprehensive as the gear worn by male football players.
Though they don’t wear thigh pads, hip pads, tailbone pads or much clothing, these women play full-contact football on a 50-by-30-yard field inside hockey-style walls.
In 2013, the league rebranded to the Legends of Football League, and players ditched the lingerie for performance apparel such as sports bras and boyshorts made of compression material.
In 2014, more effective protective gear was added to keep the players safe from contact. Improvements included better shoulder pads, chest pads, elbow and knee pads, and perhaps most importantly, better helmets.
The new LFL uniforms are still very sexy but are safer garments for playing tackle football.
