A Short History of Garters & Garter Belts
Garter History
In the most basic terms, a garter is defined to be a narrow piece of fabric worn around the leg to keep stockings up on your legs.
As you might imagine, back in the 18th and 19th centuries, elastic was not yet invented, the garters of the old days are not quite the same as our sexy little accessories.
In these times, both men and women tied garters just below their knees, at the lower leg's thinnest part, to keep their stockings from falling down. Of course, elastic has since been invented, and that's where you see our fashionable garters coming into play.
Garter Belt History
Garter belts, otherwise known as suspenders or suspender belts outside of the States, were traditionally used a way to hold up your pantyhose or tights.
Garter belts consist of two stretchy strips of fabric about two to three inches long that clip to a piece of material wrapped around your waist.
In the 20th and 21st century, the hosiery of choice turned to pantyhose and tights, introducing the garter belt trend so that these belts could accommodate the hosiery.
